Recorded over the band's first five years, the portrait of Dr. Dog that emerges through these blown-out microphones and warbling tapes is one of probing, lo-fi pop searchers. There are moments where things don't come out smelling like roses (the faux Dylan vocals and Casio beat of "I'm Standing in the Light" is particularly challenging), but the band's retro-minded charms, so evident in its studio LPs, rise to the surface of every track.
