"Houstatlantavegas" is an unusual track with which to open one's first proper release (even if one's first proper release is an EP version of a mixtape). But then, this former star of Degrassi: The Next Generation is an unusual MC. Like his breakthrough "Best I Ever Had," "Houstatlantavegas" spins on spare beats barely attached to Drake's flat flow. But unlike his mega-hit, which executes a hostile yet monotonous takeover of your brain, "Houstonatlantavegas" sounds pensive, almost spent. This is Drake's zone: odd yet compelling. The exception is "Fear," thick with vintage beats and drama.
