The most palatable parts of these prog-metal potentates' 12th album are crunchy in the dexterous manner of late-period Rush: start of "The Looking Glass"; power chords and paradiddles in "Behind the Veil" after some space-rock stuff; heavy funk-fusion quite a ways into 22-minute closer "Illumination Theory," after the Disney-soundtrack atmospherics but before the noodle soup, climactic fake ending and surprise keyboard resurrection. The riffs are never sustained. But you'll find them, if you don't mind wading through reams of bombastic orchestration and vapidities passed off as profundities.
