Duke Ellington & John Coltrane
Released: Mar 1962
The meeting of distinct talents is one of the pleasures of jazz. One reason this classic Impulse release is so special is that Duke's music (and off-kilter keyboard comping) was often far out, while Coltrane could, and often did, play sumptuous "mainstream" jazz. It's a very nice fit that's a delight from beginning to end, though their intoxicating version "In a Sentimental Mood" remains the most famous cut.
