Released: Apr 1987
As with his debut, Yoakam's second record confounded critics and enjoyed modest commercial success when it was released in 1987. People just didn't know what to think about Dwight Yoakam, who regularly played rock clubs and even toured with Husker Du. The music he made was, in fact, a much rawer take on what was just beginning to be called new country. Featuring hits "Please, Please Baby" and "Little Ways" -- as well as his fantastic ode to Kentucky, "Readin', Rightin', Route 23" -- Hillbilly Deluxe remains a highly relevant and downright superb entry in the country music pantheon.
