Just about a year after Live's 2009 demise, intense frontman Ed Kowalczyk drops his solo debut, the aptly titled Alive. Not at all surprising, it sounds a lot like your typical Live album: sturdy alternative rock, featuring Kowalczyk's angst-soaked lyrics and tortured screams. The wiry little guy does attempt to get kind of dancey on "The Great Beyond"; meanwhile, on "Drink (Everlasting Love)" and "Grace," he turns into a power balladeer. But no worries -- Kowalczyk hasn't gone completely pop. He's still pumping out grunge-powered throw-downs best heard shirtless and covered in sweat.
