Eddie Vedder's first solo album serves as the soundtrack to Sean Penn's 2007 film of the same name. Into the Wild retells the true story of Christopher McCandless, who left behind his wealthy D.C. suburban/honor-student life and disappeared into the wilds of Alaska, where he died, apparently of starvation. As can be imagined, the tone of the album is somber, but not in a morbid way. Instead Vedder uses the story to bring up questions about what really matters in life and poses ideas about McCandless' reported desire to extricate himself from what he saw as a damaged and sick society.
