Edie Brickell ruled the late 1980s with her left-field mega-hit "What I Am." After her marriage to Paul Simon, Brickell changed her career -- she puts out new music only when she wants to. This 2011 release is upbeat and good-natured instead of moody or introspective; Brickell is also funkier than most of her singer-songwriter peers (check out "On the Avenue"), and U2 would be more than happy to have the atmospheric "You Come Back" in their repertoire. Brickell simultaneously released a country-folk set with The Gaddabouts, though this one gets bonus points for the wiener dog cover painting.
