Ever hear how old session musicians are supposed to take the life out of a recording? Thankfully, nobody ever told that to Elvis Costello, who had T-Bone Burnett gather a bunch of roots rockers (including the legendary rockabilly guitarist James Burton) and cut one of the best sets of his career. "Brilliant Mistake," "Little Palaces" and the title track burn with the scathing Costello anger of old, yet they also possess a new sense of compassion and understanding. "Lovable," "I'll Wear It Proudly" and "Poisoned Rose" (which features a majestic, torchy lead vocal) are fantastic Costello originals that actually sound like old, cherished standards. One of his all-time best.
