Though How Great Thou Art was released in 1967, a year before the mythical "comeback special," the album is arguably the true beginning of Presley's late-'60s resurgence. After five long years mired in soundtrack pap, he returned to the gospel music of his youth. He sounds sincere, focused and alive. The first half is dedicated to solemn hymns. The second finds Presley paying tribute to the ecstatic worship and psalm-singing unique to Southern Christianity. Both "Run On" and "Where Could I Go But to the Lord" are notable in the way they occupy gospel, blues and rock 'n' roll simultaneously.
