Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise
Released: Jan 2001
With a combination of "clean" and traditional black-metal vocals, strings and decidedly expansive structures, Emperor's fourth and last studio album is a pure symphonic black-metal record. While it may not ripple with the intensity of their earlier work, Prometheus does push the boundaries of what's considered metal, with tons of orchestration and choral backing jammed up against Ihsahn's always-distinctive guitar playing. "Empty" sounds like black metal played on the deck of a careening ship.
