About Erma Franklin
It's hard not to live in the shadow of an elder sibling when your older sister is Aretha Franklin. After receiving some acclaim and chart success for the 1967 song "Piece of My Heart" (co-written with producer Bert Berns), Janis Joplin stumbled along with her version and weaved away with Erma Franklin's thunder in tow. The demise of her record label (Shout) in the following years made it harder for her to maintain a contract, and her last minor hit arrived on Brunswick in 1969 with "Gotta Find Me a Lover." Despite assisting her more famous sister on background vocals, Erma Franklin has since spent her time doing charity work.
