The serialism of Henri Dutilleux isn't as forbidding as that of some other 20th century modernists. On this album, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the scary-talented soprano Barbara Hannigan prove just how gorgeous the French composer's works can be, with their recorded premiere of the song cycle "Correspondences." There's some humor in this music, too, as when massive sonorities in "Danse cosmique" give way to brief, cheerful riffs for accordion. And then Anssi Karttunen knocks the composer's earlier cello concerto out the park, as a bonus.
