More than any other first-tier freak-folk group (Devendra, Joanna, Vetiver, etc.), it's Philadelphia's Espers who sound the most like real-deal musicians committed to folk music as craft. Deeply inspired by the magical forest vibes of both the Incredible String Band and Fairport Convention, the band's debut is a stunningly mature effort. Greg Weeks, Meg Baird and company have definitely done their homework, creating a sound that's both old school and stridently modern in its attention to the details.
