Headless Heroes Of The Apocalypse

Headless Heroes Of The Apocalypse by Eugene McDaniels
Released: Jan 1971
Label: Rhino Atlantic
Whether or not you choose to believe the legend that Eugene McDaniels' 1971 debut registered a personal complaint from then Vice President Spiro Agnew is beside the point. What's important is that this album is one of the first great funk dispatches from the golden era of the genre. The sly "Headless Horses" offers a view of a world where all races are pawns for the "kings of the master game," while "Jagger the Dagger" offers an indictment of rock 'n' roll excess. Sure, much of McDaniels' singing is off-key and his messages are heavy handed, but the bass lines here are amazing!
