Anthems For The Damned
Released: May 2008
Label: Pulse Recordings
Among the mass of Nirvana and NIN successors in the 1990s, Filter had a hit or two, but in the '00s they've gotten a bit lost amid the Stabbing Westwards and Sevendusts that rule modern rock radio. While Anthems is consistent and strong, it's still not breaking any ground. Banging out aggro riffs and gravelly howls to beef up their melodies, Filter evoke the grungy swagger of STP ("In Dreams," "Kill the Day") and Soundgarden ("The Take"). The biggest refresher here is "Can Stop This," a post-rock instrumental that not only pushes Filter into the 21st century, but leaves you wanting more.
