After disbanding spaced-out Seattle band Jessamine, members Rex Ritter and Andy Brown have taken their ambient haze and tacked it onto a solid instrumental core. Wavering guitar drones and gurgling vintage keyboards form the meat of Fontanelle's sound, wrapped in fluid drumming that draws as much on crisp repetitive rhythms as it does from loose jazz improvisation. The band has a taste for 1970s Fusion a la Herbie Hancock or Miles Davis, but sticks more to organically altering hypnotic grooves than extended soloing. Fontanelle perform heavily layered songs not suited for people with short attention spans; but for those happy with tracks that surpass the six-minute barrier, there's a lot going on as these intuitive jams develop.
