E Volo Love
Released: Oct 2011
Label: Domino Recording Co.
A hazy, gauzy collection of blunted edges and blurred lines, halting keyboards and soft-hewn guitars, E Volo sounds as if it were recorded in the mists of Paris (or maybe an absinthe haze). Actually, it was recorded in an old French cathedral with Tinariwen's producer, which brings us to more line-blurring: synth-pop flows into French chanson, which seamlessly transitions into ringing Afro-pop and back to indie rock, while French and English are almost interchangeable. The result is a lovely, lilting affair, especially when François sweetens his own vocals to match his soft-focus textures.
