A Man Alone & Other Songs of Rod McKuen
Released: Jan 1969
Label: Frank Sinatra Enterprises
One of the more eccentric items in Sinatra's vast catalog, A Man Alone finds the vocalist singing tunes and reciting poems written specifically for him by Rod McKuen. It's not a perfect set, but it's different and often poignant. McKuen noticed Sinatra's emotional distance and solitude, and the title track fits him like a glove. "I've Been to Town" and "Lonesome Cities" are also tender tunes, though the bleak musical poems like "Night," "Empty Is" and "Some Traveling Music" don't match the majestic melancholy (and true tragedy) of Sinatra masterworks like Only the Lonely and No One Cares.
