Released: Oct 1967
Label: Light In The Attic
Free Design's 1967 debut is an enchanting and original blend of Beach Boys/Association-style vocal harmony, rich psych pop and the kind of light rock that the Carpenters would score with in the next decade. Goofily innocent, "should've been" hits like the title track and "My Brother Woody" sit next to baroque, out-of-control protest numbers like "Make the Madness Stop." The opening and closing bars of their cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Feelin' Groovy" contains the avant-garde, retro-futurist sound that Stereolab employed decades later.
