Free At Last (Explicit)
Released: Jul 2005
Label: Roc-A-Fella Records / Shawn Carter
As "It's Over" makes clear, a lot of changes have happened in the seven years since Freeway became one of the Roc Boys, the biggest being the painful split between Jay-Z and Dame Dash, cofounders of the Roc-A-Fella dynasty. Instead of showing detached bravado, the Philadelphia native embraces his discomfort, lamenting Jay and Dame's separation and its repercussions on the melancholy "This Can't Be Real." While these moments fit the album's soulful and earnest tone, glitzy, slickly produced radio tunes like the 50 Cent-featured "Take It to the Top" and "Lights Get Low" seem out of place.
