Before Kieran Hebden turned Four Tet into a full-time job, he and his mates in Fridge reinvented rock in their own idiom, folding electronic touches into rhythm-centric guitar/drums/bass workouts. Early Output collects the band's own favorites from their days on the now-defunct Output label. Like Tortoise and Ui, Fridge know the power of a bass melody; the influence of both the Minutemen and the Durutti Column shines through in the band's home recordings. From brooding, multipart jams to more immediate rockers, this is a welcome reminder of an oft-overlooked band.
