Chandler's big hit, "Duke of Earl," purportedly evolved over a series of vocal harmonizing exercises, with lyrics added afterward. That makes sense, given the song's rather complex vocal layering contrasted with the simpler, nearly nonsensical lyrics. Regardless of the process, the song is a classic and is demonstrative of Chandler's bluesy take on classic soul. This compilation is also notable for the considerable songwriting and production contributions of fellow Chicago soul superstars Marvin Gaye, Jerry Butler and Carl Davis.
