Tell It Like It Is
George Benson
Released:
Jan 1969
Label:
A&M Jazz
Everybody in the jazz community respected George Benson, but producer Creed Taylor saw him as the breakout pop star he eventually became. Here, Taylor put Benson in a smoking R&B/Latin boogaloo session and spotlighted his soul vocals as much as his jazz guitar chops. The album actually did well with its intended audience, but Taylor next returned Benson to a jazz-funk approach that would soon lead to major stardom. Top honors go to "Land of 1000 Dances" and "Dontcha Hear Me Callin to Ya."
