Some things don't age well, but for unexpected reasons. This live set, recorded at San Francisco's Club Hangover in 1953, opens on an uber-uncomfortable note when the emcee for the evening announces, "From the Crescent City, it's George Lewis and his New Orleans Jazz Band and the last of the great Negro blues singers, Lizzie Miles." Nevertheless, Lewis and company are on fire. You can hear why American folklorist Alan Lomax was in love with the clarinetist. Lewis, born in 1900, sounds downright pre-war.
