Born in L.A. and raised in Sinaloa, Ortiz was deeply immersed in music before he started his solo career. He has collaborated with Banda El Recodo and written songs for some of the biggest regional artists, including Lupillo Rivera, Banda El Limon and Banda MS. But his debut is pure narco: He opens the album saluting the drug cartels of Colombia, starting with the late Pablo Escobar. It gets even more grisly from there: A song like "El Lider del Genocidio" is so disturbing -- the title means "leader of the genocide" -- that a love song like "Hola Corazon" seems like a complete joke.
