Les Ballets Russes, Vol. 9
Released: Feb 2013
Label: haenssler CLASSIC
This label's ambitious project -- to record all the music commissioned by Serge Diaghilev's famous ballet company of Russian expats in Paris -- is getting into deep-cut territory. Great news, as it means Darius Milhaud's charming but seldom-heard "Le Train Bleu," conceived by Jean Cocteau as a surreal portrait of beach-vacation life, gets a performance (Tracks 1-10). The "telling off fugue" (Track 9) pits golfer against tennis pro, but it's the entry of the acrobat (Track 2) -- with a primping, pounding riff -- that ought to hook you. Two other ballets follow, but Milhaud's is the corker.
