Into The Hot (EP)
by Gil Evans
Released: Sep 1961
Gil Evans used his influence with Impulse Records to spotlight the work of two young jazz composers he admired: John Carisi and Cecil Taylor. The set is kind of deceitful since the two composers lead their own sessions with Evans just setting things up. While not essential, the music is worth hearing, with Carisi's approach being similar to Evans' and Taylor combining a free jazz top to mainstream bop. Taylor's work would become much less approachable and well known (at least in universities) while Carisi would fade into obscurity.
