Right from that opening guitar line -- a metronomic ringing dipped in delicious dissonance -- Lesson No. 1's influence on indie rock becomes obvious, and gets even more so once those battering drums come crashing in. Though Glenn Branca recorded this piece in 1979-'80, its intro wouldn't sound out of place on a Sonic Youth or Yo La Tengo record released a decade later. The next track, aptly titled "Dissonance," is harsher, but again, the prescience is immediately apparent: That brutal, visceral minimal groove looks to the noise rock of Swans, Pussy Galore and Live Skull.
