Biography

Active between 1993 and 2004, God Lives Underwater were an industrial-rock band in a vein similar to Nine Inch Nails. Formed by Jeff Turzo and David Reilly in the Philadelphia area, the band released three full-lengths and a pair of EPs over the course of their career. With crunchy guitars bolstered by dancefloor beats and synth lines that screamed 120 Minutes, God Lives Underwater were the direct descendants of Trent Reznor's earliest albums. That means they were practically a metal band that you could dance to. Perennial appearances in film soundtracks helped them gain popularity, but bad luck and poor decision-making essentially submarined the band. Signed to doomed label American Recordings, and then -- when American went under -- to merger-bound A&M, the band also faced legal troubles (as well as drug problems). All of this misfortune tangled up their 2000 album, Up Off the Floor, which didn't hit shelves until '04, with no major-label support. A year later, founding member David Reilly died of complications from an infected tooth.
