Biography

Formed by sole constant member Infernus in 1992, Gorgoroth are one of the longest-running Norwegian black metal bands, playing essentially the same style into the '00s. Initially releasing albums on their own and with local labels, the band signed to the internationally distributed Nuclear Blast in 1997. The move was seen as a sell-out, and the industrial elements of 2000's Incipit Satan further irked longtime fans. Despite these changes and a revolving lineup, Gorgoroth's dedication to anti-Christian, satanic ideas is extreme even for the scene from which they hail. In '04, they gained worldwide notoriety when they were arrested after a gig in Krakow, Poland. In addition to performing amid sheeps' heads displayed on stakes, the band splashed around in hundreds of gallons of sheeps' blood while four nude women hung on crucifixes. Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam followed in '06 and, along with critically well-received 2009 album Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt, the group returned to the blistering, noise-prone black metal they were known for. The infamous 2004 concert was released as a DVD titled Black Mass Krakow 2004 in '08.
