When it comes to sheer visceral pleasure, nobody beats the Gotan Project. A tangle of violins, a thread of bandoneon, Cristina Vilallonga's sultry swale of a voice ... it's all so elegant, so expert that you know you're being manipulated but don't care. Tango 3.0 is no different, and that's its joy and also its problem. Gotan do what they do exceedingly well, but will their formula allow them to do anything else? The nods to New Orleans jazz work nicely, but one of the best songs on the album is "El Mensajero," which liberates itself from dance beats and embraces melody.
