The former Grant Lee Buffalo frontman gets even more eclectic on his fifth solo outing. With Strangelet, he takes your hand and slowly walks you through his record collection. "Runaway" echoes ghosts of early Radiohead, and "Return To Love" gives a nod to John Lennon's later solo recordings. "Johnny Guitar" could be the best song and most obvious tribute here. With doubled guitar leads, dramatic cellos and breathy, reverberated vocals, Phillips does his best T.Rex, and damn if it doesn't sound like a lost gem from Marc Bolan's Electric Warrior sessions.
