Billie Joe growls about "folks on the hill" over stadium-sized guitar riffs and a plodding backbeat to recast John Lennon's scornful socialist anthem and benefit Amnesty International efforts in Darfur. Green Day endow the tune with the same ambiguous, overdriven political protest that traversed American Idiot, and even if the cover will likely rankle purists, the band is wise enough to let Lennon get in the last word, tagging on a recording of the song's author after the final refrain.
