Like a lot of his American peers, L.A.'s Groundislava tends to skulk around the interstices between house, hip-hop and lo-fi bedroom funk. What makes his music immediately stand out is its clarity. Instead of the dank, fuzzy muddle of so much "beat music," Groundislava gravitates towards svelte melodies and limpid analog atmospheres: Consider the placid hip-house of "Living Under a Rock," with crisp drum machine bathed in cool chords. Even at his most maximal, songs like "TV Dream" render cinematic expanse in unusually intimate terms.
