The State vs. Radric Davis (Bonus Tracks, Explicit)
Gucci Mane
Released:
Dec 2009
Label:
Asylum/Warner Bros.
Touted as the next big thing, the Atlanta emcee delivers a satisfying if inconsistent album just as his hype peaks. From the opening track, "Classical," it's clear that Gucci has a knack for wordplay, and his brand of lyricism places puns at the pinnacle -- his deconstructions teeter between the profound and the idiotic. His marble-mouth flow and the production's pattering hi-hats rattle as the punchy minor-chord grime is aggressively Southern, in the best possible way. Hearing him next to Weezy and Cam'Ron on "Stupid Wild" is a treat.
