Biography

Argentinean Gustavo Santaolalla is a veteran rock musician, producer and soundtrack artist who has helped handcraft several generations of musicians. He led two influential rock bands in the 1960s and '70s, respectively: Arco Iris and Soluna. In 1978 he moved to the United States and within a few years became the producer behind the '80s wave of new Mexican rock, working with acts like Caifanes, Maldita Vecinidad and Cafe Tacuba. His label Surco's first release was Molotov's insanely popular Donde Jugaran Las Ninas?. He's produced a slew of critical and commercial successes: La Vela Puerca, Juanes and Bersuit Vergarabat, to name a few. He assembled the artists for the 2003 electronica/tango release Bajo Fondo Tango Club, helping to spearhead that movement in Argentina and Uruguay. Santaolalla also tried his hand at film soundtracks, crafting critically lauded -- and massively popular -- soundtracks for movies including Amores Perros and Motorcycle Diaries, which culminated in his Grammy-winning work on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack.
