The 2006 album Beyond Hell is GWAR's most ambitious since 1995's RagNaRok. A rock opera detailing the band's Dante-inspired journey into hell's sprawling network of caves and catacombs, the album reveals the band's ability to keep up with evolving tastes in heavy metal. More of a straightforward thrash unit in the early 1990s, GWAR has gradually added elements of metalcore, art rock and nu-metal to its sound. Despite a knack for guffaw-inducing absurdity, Beyond Hell isn't a terribly fun listen. Its epic narrative is so detailed and complex that it actually demands quite a bit of brain focus.
