Viva Cubop!: Jazz The Afro-Cuban Way

Jan 1999

Biography

The Harlem Youth Percussion Group -- or Har-You, as they're known -- came into being in the late-1960s when several Harlem educators brainstormed ways to keep kids in school. Four years of percussion training later, the ensemble that grew out of those discussions released a one-off LP in the '70s that became a cult classic but didn't go much farther. Thanks to a re-release on the Ubiquity label in the mid-'90s, a whole new generation has been introduced to this outstanding example of Latin Soul and Funk. The rhythmic sense is incredibly mature, the drumming stellar, and the grooves are consistently in the pocket. A must-hear.
