Harry Belafonte is renowned for his many talents, not the least of which are his tireless skills at promoting Caribbean music, his ability to turn folk songs into pop gold and his buttery, butterfly kiss of a tenor. Those talents and more are very much on display on this 1956 album, which introduced Americans to the calypso music the Jamaican-American singer encountered during his childhood -- and introduced himself as that music's soulful, golden-throated curator. The classics you know are here -- "Day-O," "Brown Skin Girl" -- but you'll also find plenty of new classics to fall in love with.
