Wow. "Mimouna" is a great song, and The Gift is a pretty great album. Hakmoun somehow makes Morocco's hypnotic gnawa music accessible; songs like "Lala Aisha " take their time, like a dog circling a spot on the carpet, but when they finally commit to a direction, the result is solid and gut-grabbing. The Paula Cole duet just didn't need to happen, however.
