Heavy D & the Boyz

Back in the '80s, Heavy D & the Boyz were one of the biggest groups in hip-hop. The Mount Vernon, Queens, quartet frequently outsold Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and other fan favorites. And even when the industry turned hardcore and gangsta in the following decade, the Boyz continued to notch feel-good pop-rap hits on the R&B and dance charts. This was due to its prime voice, the "overweight lover" Heavy D. The crew -- Heavy D, DJ-producer Eddie Ferrell, and hypemen/backup dancers G-Whiz and Trouble T. Roy -- first scored with their debut, 1987's Living Large. Two years later, the group recorded the New Jack Swing classic Big Tyme with the smash "We Got Our Own Thang" and "Gyrlz, They Love Me." During a tour for that album, Trouble T. Roy died as a result of an accidental fall. The tragedy created a pall over their next two albums, 1991's Peaceful Journey and 1992's Blue Funk. But they still continued to make hits like "Now That We Found Love" and "Is It Good to You." The Boyz hosted one more party, 1994's Nuttin' But Love, before Heavy D split for a solo career. Meanwhile Eddie F continues to produce tracks for top-ranked R&B and hip-hop artists like Jadakiss and Donell Jones.
