One of the only 19th-century works devoted to the viola, Harold En Itale was commissioned by Nicolo Paganini for 20,000 francs, thus saving Berlioz from financial ruin. Berlioz announces the lower-register focus from the opening motive, and under Sir Colin Davis' hand, the huge orchestra moves deftly. For a Paganini part, the viola passages show remarkable restraint, and Tabea Zimmermann fills the role without a moment of overexuberance.
