Certain sectors of indie-leaning electronic music have spent the past couple of years suffused in shadows and melancholy, borrowing Burial's Codeine-soaked R&B melodies and blowing them up into billowing expressions of sad-sack affect. Holy Other mastered the art on 2011's With U EP, and he does it again with his debut LP, in which rave's ghosts shuffle in time to molasses-drip beats drowned in teary, New Age synths. Taken together, his haunted-ballroom ballads risk tipping into bathos, but there's an undeniable force to his midnight-hued mood music.
