It's hard to tell if the Metal-worshipping riffs that House Of Large Sizes recklessly toss off are meant to pay homage to all those Headbangers Ball favorites, or to make fun of them. Either way, this Iowa-based trio brandish guitars like they're cocked and loaded with ammo, ready to fire off great big chunks of hardened licks with the accuracy of a firing squad. It's not meathead rock, though -- when you least expect it, the chugging guitar-fest ends and "Homemade Zodiac" helps you recover from all the songs before it by turning down the guitars, slowing the speed and singing in pretty vocals with echoes. Sure, they can only stay tranquil for so long before they start lobbing grenades again, but they prove that they've got a way with whatever they tackle. And underneath all the great big riffs and monster-truck-sized rock, you get the feeling that they're not letting on just how clever they really are.
