The word phola means "to get well, to heal" in South Africa, and though they never hit you over the head, this album's lyrics demonstrate just how much healing is needed in this world. Recording his 35th album in his 70th year, Masekela seems to be taking stock -- reflecting on life, climate change, drug abuse -- in gentle, at-times maddeningly smooth-jazz-tinged songs. Some tracks sizzle, however: the playful "Ghana," about meeting his wife, is a highlight. Masekela's flugelhorn is undiminished -- as sensitive, thoughtful and unforced as it ever was.
