I Wayne might identify himself as part of Jamaica's new wave of roots reggae, but this guy can sing a phrase like "total annihilation" and make you wonder what sex act he's referring to. With a soprano that seductive, I Wayne can't help exuding a certain romantic calm even when he's decrying war, domestic violence and the like. That's not to call into question his roots credentials: Book of Life hits all the right socially conscious notes, and with genuine panache. But for better or for worse, I Wayne's lovely sound lets you tune out the message and tune into the sweetly relaxed vibe.
