Nineteen-ninety-seven was a good year for French electronic music: It brought us Daft Punk's Homework, Laurent Garnier's 30 and this, the debut LP from I:Cube, aka Nicolas Chaix. On songs like "Picnic Attack" and "Disco Cubizm," Chaix delivers taut, disco-infused house as electrifying as anything on his compatriots' records, but he devotes just as much time to blissed-out jazz-funk ("Power Sandwich," "Mighty Atom-Sub Aqua") and dubby downtempo ("Marmelade," "Silence"). "11 Novembre," meanwhile, transplants Motor City techno vibes to the City of Light.
