Keeril Makan is a composer on the rise, and the ICE group's brand is known as a contemporary-classical seal of quality. This album keeps those trends alive, while also managing surprise. "Mercury Songbirds" starts with some familiar modernist touches -- throttled textures and abrupt edges -- before offering heavenly sustained harmonies in between silences. "Afterglow" uses simple harmonic material to direct attention to the droning decay of notes as they fall away. (Something similar happens with "Mu.") All the attributes coalesce on "After Forgetting," which also has moments of pulsing verve.
