Biography

Intocable, according to Billboard, were the second-biggest Regional Mexican band in the United States in the '00s, next to Conjunto Primavara -- and by far the biggest to have actually come out of the U.S. itself. Formed in Zapata, Tex., in the early '90s, the cowboy-attired combo initially released sparsely selling albums on an independent local label, out of Corpus Christi. But they had jumped to the big leagues by the middle of that decade, and were soon scoring on the higher reaches of the Regional Mexican chart with their harmonized, ballad-heavy, slightly poppified -- some even say countrified -- hybrid of Tejano and Norteno accordion polkas. In 1999, in a road accident en route to Monterrey, two band members and their road manager were killed, and the rest of the band injured and sidelined in the hospital for a week. But when Intocable came back -- initially paying tribute to the brothers they'd lost -- they were bigger than ever. By 2005 they were winning Latin Grammys for Best Norteno Album and Best Regional Mexican Song; by decades' end, they had more than a dozen albums under their belt
